Where to stay during Madrid Pride: practical tips
Discover the best places to stay during Madrid Pride, from Chueca to nearby areas. Tips on booking, transport, and why El Patio de Chueca is ideal.
Madrid Pride, officially known as MADO (Madrid Orgullo), attracts thousands of visitors every year. Choosing the right place to stay can make all the difference in enjoying this vibrant event.
Why is staying near Chueca a good idea?
Most of the official MADO programme takes place in Chueca. The main stages, the street events, the crowds – it all converges here. We're on Plaza de Pedro Zerolo, which hosts one of those main stages. Staying in the neighbourhood means you can walk everywhere without needing public transport, which gets complicated during Pride week. You step out the door and you're in it.
Chueca is also the heart of Madrid's LGBTQ+ community, and during Pride, it transforms into a vibrant hub of celebration. The streets are filled with music, food stalls, and pop-up bars, making it a unique experience to stay right in the middle of the action. Beyond the events, Chueca offers a variety of restaurants, cafes, and shops that cater to all tastes. Staying here means immersing yourself fully in the spirit of Pride.
Additionally, staying in Chueca allows you to experience the neighbourhood's unique charm beyond the Pride festivities. From its lively squares to its boutique stores, Chueca is a year-round destination for anyone who loves vibrant city life. During Pride, the area becomes even more colourful, with rainbow flags adorning balconies and special menus in local eateries. Being in Chueca means you're not just attending Pride; you're living it.
What should your accommodation provide?
During Pride, you need a solid base. A place to recharge, a good shower, and reliable Wi-Fi to coordinate with friends. You also need a break from the noise. Our rooms are designed for that. We're right on the square, but they offer a quiet space to rest. And because we live and work here, we can give you practical advice on the official MADO programme — what's happening, when, and how to navigate it all.
Another key feature to look for is air conditioning. Madrid in late June and early July can get very hot, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C (86°F). A cool, comfortable room can make a big difference after a day of festivities. Additionally, consider accommodations that offer flexible check-in and check-out times, as Pride events often run late into the night, and you might need some extra rest in the morning.
Security is another important consideration. With large crowds and busy streets, having a secure place to store your belongings is crucial. Look for accommodations that offer in-room safes or secure lockers. Also, consider places that provide 24-hour reception or on-site staff, as this can be helpful if you have any issues or need assistance during your stay.
When should you book your accommodation?
The official MADO dates are usually announced early in the year, typically for the last week of June and the first days of July. The main parade is always on the first Saturday of July. From our experience, the entire neighbourhood is fully booked months before. We see it every year. If you want to stay in Chueca, booking three to four months in advance isn't being over-cautious; it's just necessary.
If you're planning to travel with a group, it's even more important to book early. Larger accommodations or multiple rooms in the same location can be harder to find as the event approaches. Some hotels and hostels also offer early-bird discounts for reservations made well in advance, so planning ahead can save you money as well as stress.
For those who are more spontaneous, consider setting up alerts on booking platforms for last-minute cancellations. While this is a riskier option, it can sometimes yield surprising results. However, keep in mind that prices tend to rise significantly as the event approaches, so early booking is always the safer bet.
Book early. Seriously. The neighbourhood gets completely full.
What are the alternatives if you can't find a place in Chueca?
During Pride week, getting around Madrid changes. Many streets in the centre are closed to traffic, especially around the parade route. The Metro runs, but stations in Chueca and Gran Vía can have restricted access or temporary closures due to crowds. Staying outside the neighbourhood means factoring in significant travel time and navigating these disruptions. It's doable, but it's a different experience.
If Chueca is fully booked, consider nearby neighbourhoods like Malasaña, La Latina, or Lavapiés. These areas are within walking distance or a short Metro ride from the main Pride events. Malasaña is known for its trendy bars and alternative vibe, while La Latina offers a more traditional Madrid experience with its tapas bars and historic streets. Lavapiés, on the other hand, is a multicultural area with a vibrant arts scene. Each of these neighbourhoods has its own charm and can provide a unique perspective on the city during Pride.
For those willing to stay a bit further out, areas like Chamberí or Salamanca offer quieter, more residential vibes while still being well-connected to the city centre. These neighbourhoods are ideal for visitors who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere and don't mind a short commute to the Pride festivities. Public transport, including night buses, makes it relatively easy to get back to these areas after late-night events.
What makes El Patio de Chueca special during Pride?
We are located on Plaza de Pedro Zerolo. This isn't just near the action; one of the main MADO stages is set up right on the square. We see it from our windows. This means you have a base camp right at the core of the events. You can come back to rest, change, or drop things off between activities without missing anything. We focus on getting the essentials right: a comfortable bed, a clean space, and staff who can give you the real, practical information you need for the week.
Our location also allows guests to experience the unique atmosphere of Chueca during Pride. From our rooftop terrace, you can enjoy views of the celebrations while sipping a drink in a more relaxed setting. We also organize small events and gatherings for our guests, providing opportunities to meet other Pride attendees and share experiences. Our team is always on hand to help with recommendations, whether it's finding the best spots to watch the parade or suggesting quieter places to unwind.
In addition to the prime location, we pride ourselves on creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.
